Director´s vision
In Argentina, we all grow up with the idea that we’re being screwed over, that someone is pulling the strings to keep our life small. Distrust is like smoke hovering above the ground. It doesn’t completely cover everything, but it makes us doubt every step we’re about to take, for fear of falling into a trap.
That’s what this film is about: post-truth, conspiracies, and the myths that sometimes feel like they might be nothing more than myths. Because for something like that to happen, a lot of people would have to agree, and if there’s one thing Argentinians struggle with, it’s moving in the same direction together. Individualism is our strength. We only know how to unite in extreme situations, at the very last moment, or for fun — which is no small thing.
This film is individual too. I made it at home, with minimal availability of every person who worked on it. Distrust also stains this dirty film, though it reaches for the oneiric. Nothing ever fully feels believable: not even the coffin guarding the supposed power seems real. Maybe every space is actually the same place; maybe the words are as real as they are improvised.
It’s no surprise nowadays for a film to be as fictional as it is real. Because nobody needs a film, but many of us need to make one. And that’s where the juggling act required to make it becomes an indispensable skill.
I don’t want to show blood. I don’t want a line of dialogue to be fully understood, nor the story to be coherent. But I do want you to feel a dryness in your throat. I want the film to leave you wondering whether it was real or not, whether the decor was made of wood or cardboard, whether it was funny or bitter.
I grew up with American programming on TV, like all of Latin America, but I also grew up with local content: sparse, violent, sensationalist. Esto! magazine with its shocking headlines, as outrageous as they were imaginative.
The Crypto Child was born because, in every movie where where a child’s birth is announced… the child is born.
